Which way is up for a door?

When you are looking at a door there are styles, rails and panels that make up a door. The rail and style of a door consists of one of more panels surrounded by two vertical boards (styles) on each side, and horizontal boards (rails) top and bottom. There is sometime a center rail this is usually called a lock rail, as this is where your hardware for locking will be drilled and installed.

When you are looking at a door 99% of the time the bottom rail will be the largest rail out of the two.

In this picture with the Craftsman door ($499.99 door only) it is easy to tell which way is up, the windows are a clear giveaway. But what if there isn't a clear distinction? You can use the bottom rail knowledge!

How to know which way your doors swing

When entering into a world of renovation jargon and uncertanties it can be tough, confusing and outright frustrating when you don't understand. If you are replacing your doors it is important to understand which way they swing. When you are dealing with interior doors it is easiest to talk about INSWINGS only.

If you are standing in the hallway looking at your door, hinges are on the right hand side and the door knob is on the left this door swings into the room (inswing) this is a Right Hand Inswing. If the hinges are on the left and the door swings into the room=Left Hand Inswing.
